The final blog for ALES204

Ales 204 is a very unique class which I had attend in University of Alberta. It is much different from any other classes I’ve learned, and it focuses on our ability to communicate with other people, who will especially benefit for our academic learning and career opportunities, and the concept of critical literacy.

The main topic in this class was social media. We have met Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,   Flicker, audioboo, and learned how to use them. This class related these newly developed internet tools to our daily lives, and noted how they will change our life styles hugely.

In the social media lectures, I have learned not only using social media as a social network but a platform of opportunities. In social medias, we could note everyone else’s behavior, helping us to know better about them, and we may discover the trends of society, also get information about job chances. Another importance of social media is that it gives people a relatively free platform to express their own ideas, and which will leads people to resist dictatorships, like the Spring of Arab. I have never used Linkedin, and Twitter before, and due to this class. Twitter, as a special blog, created us a network which shares our daily lives and ideas. More than that, I find Twitter is really a amazing place to sop news, with a maxim 140 words, people could contain their information in short and easily read form. I think Twitter nowadays would be the fastest source of news. I have experienced the using of LinkedIn, and it is really a professional network which I believe is deeply related to modern work communications, and especially helping us searching future jobs.

In the future, I’ll continue using these social medias, because It provides more diversions of life and ability of far-sighting for me. The advantages of social media in the future.

Wiki Week

We may find everything we want to know on Wikipedia. It is a huge data-base, and it is a giant resource-sharing centre. It is a online encyclopedia, on which people may edit and peer review any stub they are interested in. In general, If we just want to know something of the knowledge, Wikipedia is enough, because its advantage in informative quantity. But the Wiki also has its drawbacks. Due to the data on Wiki allows everyone to edit, so editors may be biased on the stub they are editing. Therefore, if applied in the fields of science, the data on Wikipedia is not being used as citation, because it is difficult to prove if it is really correct.

I've edited one stub on Wiki, which is about Wang Jingwei, a politician during WW2. It is difficult to add anything new to a stub which is already having lots of information. So I have to be careful that the content of mine do not overlap with other people's. I added the information I got from books and articles, which other people didn't mention.

The reference takes a little bit work to do, since it is using the certain types of format.

I found Lindsay's blog very interesting, and she is talking about the "super food"  which gives people strength and health body. I think "super food" will become the main strain of people's diet in the future, because the needs of keeping fit and healthy are becoming more and more important nowadays.

Do we have to drink milk?

There are many people who do not drink milk, sometimes because of their religion and culture, sometimes due to Lactose intolerance. So, do we really have to drink milk everyday?

The milk is indeed a good food. The human body requires a certain amount of protein and calcium daily, milk may be the most convenient way to provide high-quality protein and calcium. Milk are classified as "high-quality protein" because milk proteins and human demand on the amino acid composition is very close, also the digestion and absorption rate is high. The milk is not only rich in calcium and it’s absorption rate is high also. In addition, milk also contains a considerable number of manganese, potassium, and certain vitamins and other trace elements. So milk is the conventional food of people.
Good food, not which one is irreplaceable. In fact, milk is a common allergen, and there are a lot people who is lactose intolerant . When these kind of people drink milk, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and even other more serious reactions will occur. In addition, for those vegan, milk is the refusal column.
We eat any food, in order to meet the specific nutritional needs. Which food can apply the major nutrients provided by milk?

First talk about the protein. For a long time in the history, people are lacking of protein in the diet, especially the relative lack of high quality protein. In that era, eggs, milk quality protein-rich food, becomes a "tonic". Now, most people have solved the problem of food and clothing, and in many areas, lack of protein no longer exists, and even a lot of people are protein excessed. So, without milk, the protein problem is a easily being solved. In addition to eggs, soy products, chicken, fish and other lean meat are also good source for protein.

For milk, calcium is the more important contribution than the protein.People need about 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day.100 grams of milk provide about 110 mg calcium. If you do not drink milk, calcium can come from vegetables. Good source of calcium is spinach, cabbage, beans, and so on. 100 grams spinach or cabbage contains the similar amount of calcium comparing to 100 grams of milk. 100 grams tofu contained calcium even more than two cups of milk.

As for the other nutrients provided by milk, such as manganese, potassium, vitamin D, B2, B12, etc., can be obtained from other foods. Such as manganese, potassium and vitamin B2, spinach and milk compared favorably; B vitamins, eggs richer.

In fact, the advantages of milk are obvious, but of course, it is also not a "perfect food". In recent years, some scholars believe that saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein in the milk, is quite detrimental to human health. They believe that although the milk does provide quality nutrients mentioned earlier, but those ingredients can be obtained from other foods. Taking into account its "negative effect", these scholars do not even think that milk is a good food. Although this view is "small minority", the mainstream view is still the milk as a quality food, but it also shows that at least: the milk is not that necessary.

All in all, the milk was a good food. However, it provides nutrients which can be obtained through other foods. As long as a comprehensive and balanced attention to food, drink milk or not is not a big deal.
Note Marisa Salon's blog page about nutrition, she shares some similar idea with my work.

The picture I posted today is a screenshot from my Facebook page. This page is like a online resume, It contains most information that will appear on a paper resume, and definitely there are points that employers are interested in. The link of my page is as follow: Link

The Facebook page has the potential to become a very useful tool in the coming future, it is more fast and environmental friendly way than traditional paper resume for job-seekers, also it is more easier to put these files in order for employers. And the relationship between this page and social media will allow employers to find out the real personality of applicants.

Additionally, this page gives people a stage to express themselves, because it is a webpage that belongs to ourselves and we can totally show other people how we think and how we act. All of these fact will contribute to build a fulfilled person, and help employer to get a better impress.

The introduction of myself

Nice to meet everyone: ), my name is Yuhan and I'm now a second year student in University of Alberta.  I have  many hobbies, despite those common ones among boys like video games or basketball, I like cooking! So I chose  Food Business Management as my major in university, hoping in the future I'll deal with food products.

Also, I'm dedicated in traveling, because I consider it as the best way to enhance my personality and eye-reach. I like coastal cities and mountains. I 've traveled many places but the most memorable tour is in Jiuzhaigou Valley, I've been there during the summer times, it is just like the Shangrila lost in the centre of many huge mountains. Everything there is so colorful and attractive, which makes me want to stay there.  (And do not come back for school...)

I believe social media is very important nowadays, although when I was very small, people were using paper letter or phone to communicate with each other, and when I grew up, cellphone messages and e-mail are introduced to our lives, now, communication between people is becoming more and more relying on the social medias like Facebook or Twitter.

In my field of study, social media is one of the most important tool to communicate with classmates and professors, for example, all the lecture notes and discussion of my Chemistry 261 class is on a Facebook group. Also, for doing my group work and projects, I have to contact with my partner or group member by social medias, because social media provides us a better platform to illustrate our image and video information. In the future work, I think social media will be the core of communicating for business relationships. For example, I can search the related people on my current customers' social media and looking for any potential customers.
